Build a LinkedIn presence that attracts the right conversations

An effective presence does not try to appeal to everyone: it attracts the most relevant contacts.

01

Choose your core topics

Professional communication becomes easier to recognise when readers understand the questions you explore. Choose a few themes connected to your expertise and your audience’s decisions. For a sales consultancy, these might include targeting, outreach messages and follow-up organisation.

For each theme, record questions people genuinely ask you. These provide more focused starting points than a broad label such as “performance”. Develop a situation, explain a reasoning error or offer an initial way to examine a problem.

These themes act as editorial reference points. They help you select worthwhile topics and connect content to your work, while leaving room to vary perspectives, examples and formats.

02

Speak to a precise audience

Content written for a specific audience starts with a recognisable situation. “How can we improve prospecting?” is very broad. “How can a small sales team organise follow-ups across several segments?” gives relevant readers a context they can identify and assess.

Choose a specific reader’s perspective before drafting. What decisions do they face? Which information is missing? What constraint makes the issue difficult? This preparation helps you explain the subject in familiar words and choose a useful example.

Different posts can address different audiences. Each individual piece benefits from a primary reader. This precision supports clear writing and helps you observe which topics generate conversations closest to your work.

03

Create entry points

A post can encourage further discussion when it leaves room for readers’ experience. After explaining your perspective, ask a question connected to a practical decision, such as “What helps you prioritise accounts today?” A focused opening makes a considered response easier.

When someone comments, take time to understand their contribution. A response that engages with their context develops the conversation more effectively than an automatic acknowledgement. If private discussion would help, suggest it with a clear reason and their agreement.

Review the substance of the exchanges too: who contributes, which questions recur and what needs further explanation? These observations can inform the next article and improve your understanding of the audience’s expectations.
