Why Social Selling starts before the first message

Your presence, content and targeting prepare the quality of the conversation before outreach begins.

01

Your profile speaks before you do

Your first message may lead its recipient to visit your profile before replying. What they find should help them place the person contacting them. A profile disconnected from the message topic can make your approach difficult to interpret.

Before reaching out, make your current role, intended audience and fields of work understandable. If you want to discuss sales leadership topics, explain your connection to those subjects. A complete sales pitch is unnecessary at this stage.

Then reread the message alongside the profile. Do they describe the same activity? This simple check helps create continuity between discovering your name and understanding your reason for contacting someone.

02

Your content creates context

Published content reveals how you think. It can explain a choice, clarify a difficulty or share lessons from real experience. Across these topics, readers gain more information about the approach behind your work.

For example, explore related sales questions through separate posts: defining a target, preparing a message and organising follow-up. Each should contribute its own perspective. Coherence comes from the relationship between the topics and their usefulness to the intended reader.

This presence does not guarantee visibility or replies. It provides context that people can consult when they want to know more. Prioritise readable, clear ideas before increasing publication volume.

03

The message becomes continuity

A first message benefits from an identifiable professional reason. A post you have genuinely read, relevant company context or a question connected to your field can provide an opening. Be able to explain honestly why you selected that person.

An illustrative approach might be: “Your point about sales organisation raises a question I encounter in my work. How does your team approach that subject?” Adapt it to a real context without suggesting familiarity that does not exist.

Prepare for what follows too. Which answer would help you understand the situation? What useful contribution could you make? That attention makes the message the start of a conversation rather than an automatic campaign step.
